Short Description

A coffee steeped in legend, shaped by craft. Our He Shou Wu Drip Coffee  blends aromatic Arabica with He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti) — a root associated in  Chinese folklore with vitality and longevity. The result is deep, earthy and  quietly sweet, mirroring the ingredient’s mysterious character.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Rich, intriguing earthiness. It opens with dark, woody notes, softened  by a hint of dried-fruit sweetness. There’s a touch of soil and cocoa too — like  drinking coffee in a mountain temple while herbal roots gently simmer nearby.  Herbal, inviting, never overpowering.

Palate: Full-bodied and bittersweet. Fo-Ti brings a natural sweet-bitter quality,  reminiscent of well-brewed black tea or bittersweet caramel. You may pick up  molasses and dried black plum alongside the coffee’s deep chocolate tones.  The texture is complex: smooth, with a light tannic grip. A faint, pleasant  astringency — like high-cacao dark chocolate or tea — keeps the cup feeling  clean and refined.

Finish: Quiet, long, and composed. Dry and gently warming, with traces of oak  and dried fig on the breath. The aftertaste lingers like pu-erh tea or a barrel aged coffee — subtle, steady, and calm. No cloying sweetness; just a thread of  sweetness woven through a restrained bitterness, inviting you to slow down.

Product Details

Ingredient Origin: Made with authentic He Shou Wu root, also known as Fo-Ti  (Polygonum multiflorum). Our Fo-Ti comes from wild and semi-wild hill regions  in Guangxi and Hunan, China — areas long recognised for high-quality Fo-Ti.  The name “He Shou Wu” is often translated as “Black-Haired Mr He”, from a  Tang Dynasty legend in which a man surnamed He regained vigour (and dark  hair) after eating the root. Fo-Ti has been celebrated in traditional Chinese  medicine for nearly 1,300 years, often regarded as a nourishing ingredient  linked to longevity (sometimes called an “elixir of life” in folklore). We select  roots aged at least 3–4 years, when their characteristic compounds and deep amber colour are more fully developed. Wild or semi-wild roots tend to offer a  fuller, more concentrated flavour than many cultivated alternatives.

Craftsmanship: Each step combines tradition with modern quality control. Our  prepared Fo-Ti is lab-tested to ensure purity (free from contaminants) and to  confirm correct processing — important, as raw Fo-Ti can be intense. We don’t  treat it as an “add-on”, but as a core flavour component — it gives structure to  the cup. Cupping guides the final ratio so Fo-Ti remains distinct yet elegant,  adding complexity like a well-seasoned whisky cask might lend depth. The  result is a genuinely singular drip coffee: specialty Arabica seamlessly fused  with an ancient root. It’s neither flavoured coffee nor a medicinal drink — it sits  thoughtfully in between, a handcrafted “elixir” meant to be savoured.

Packaging & Sustainability

Presentation: A black gift box containing 8 individually wrapped drip sachets.

Informative Detailing: Inside, you’ll find a beautifully made card that shares  the “Mr He” legend and the ingredient’s cultural meaning in a calm, elegant  tone — along with brewing guidance designed for this blend (we recommend a  slightly longer extraction to bring out the root’s full character).

Sustainable & Safe Packaging: The drip filter uses food-grade, unbleached  paper to avoid unwanted odours or chemical residues. The outer box is  recyclable, each sachet is recyclable, and inks are environmentally responsible.  Because Fo-Ti carries a pronounced earthy aroma, we use a multi-layer oxygen  barrier to prevent the packaging from absorbing smell, keeping the contents  fresh and clean until opening.

Ethical Sourcing: Wild herbs must be harvested responsibly. We work with  suppliers who follow quota systems and rotate harvesting areas to avoid  depleting wild Fo-Ti populations. With each batch, a portion of proceeds  supports local replanting projects (returning Fo-Ti vine cuttings to the  landscape), ensuring luxury never comes at the cost of ecological damage. For  sustainability, the sun-drying stage of processing uses solar-powered drying  equipment to reduce energy use. We’re proud that this coffee offers distinctive  flavour alongside cultural respect and environmental care.
